Opossums

Opossums are the only marsupials found in North America. The Opossum’s diet consists of fruits, vegetables, grain, and trash, although the opossum’s food of choice seems to be dead animals.

When and Why They Become a Nuisance

Opossums can become a nuisance any time of the year. They may raid improperly sealed trash cans and pet foods left outdoors. Opossums may seek shelter in attics, crawl spaces, sheds, decks and porches. Opossums living in and around homes produce unwanted waste and nocturnal noise. It is not uncommon for opossums to die in and around homes producing even more of a problem.

Most damage caused by opossums occur during the winter and early spring.  They will destroy soffits, tear off shingles, damage crawl space vents and take off mushroom vent caps just to gain access to your home. Once inside they will destroy insulation and wires to modify the house to their liking. Opossum droppings pose another threat altogether. Their droppings may contain a variety of diseases harmful to pets and humans.
